Animals that are kept illegally by the public are often confiscated by law enforcement officials. These animals become the responsibility of the state, pending the outcome of the legal action. Where possible, the Centre makes its facilities available to provide housing and care for them until the law has taken its course.
During 2004 and 2005 seven lions that were confiscated by the Department of Environmental Affairs of the Limpopo Province were accommodated at the HESC. After a prolonged stay at the Centre homes were found for these lions and they were settled into their new home.
